The Expert Cycle Electrics story

Fixing the Unfixable.. As a Hobby

After working through college as a cycle tech and graduating with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, our founder was hired by American Honda in LA. Here he diagnosed electrical problems in motorcycles and redesigned them to be more reliable--as in "less likely to catch fire." He worked there for a few years, and then went into the computer industry for 30 years. This is when fixing "dead" or "unfixable" motorcycles became his hobby, bringing back to life at least one motorcycle a month, ones others had written off. However, as soon as he had fixed a "worthless" cycle and had it running right, he lost interest, sold it, and immediately found another bike to revive. How many cycles did he repair and sell in 30 years -- about 350 -- of every brand! Now retired from the computer world, he is back doing what he likes; "healing" motorcycles with electrical problems, and wiring custom bikes, like Streamliners, Bobbers, and Cafe Racers -- where he brags that he can wire any accessory to work on virtually any bike. Fixing what dealers won't touch is his idea of fun, as he can fix any electrical problem found on a motorcycle, sometimes "fixing the unfixable." For example, while reviving a Kawasaki ATV he bought from MCR (a local metalrecycler) for $22 to use in teaching his grandkids how to repair cycles, he found it had a dead CDI, which Kawasaki wanted $285 to replace. Knowing how CDI's work, he substituted a $11 Chinese CDI unit, which are identical copies of Honda CDI's -- and got the ATV running in an hour -- for only 11 bucks! This kind of repair is called an "unnatural act," as manufacturers deliberately design their CDI ignitor boxes so they cannot be substituted, unless of course, you know what is inside their (CDI) box. This is where we leave other cycle shops in the dust.

We "fix the unfixable," and do it fairly often.

We occasionally install or fix electrics and wiring custom cars. For a cycle owner, we recently re-energized his customized Mitsubishi diesel box van, after three auto techs had given up on it, including a Master Electrician who quit after 5 hours. We guarantee our work; if it doesn't work, you don't pay. Compare this to what dealers offer; if after they replace a pricey part and it doesn't work, you get to buy another part and try again. Why? This is the best they can do. They have little if any ability to diagnose electrical issues. So what's ailing your bike, or custom?

Call us today to find out. We diagnose for $75 and tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix.

Why Choose Us.

As told by our founder?

I know what every part in cycle electrical systems does and can identify which part is not working almost intuitively, and often by phone. Once I know which part is “toast” I replace it-- the right part, the first time--making your bike’s electricals work perfectly.
I am a degreed electrical engineer who has worked on cycles for all my life and worked on the engineering staff of American Honda, fixing motorcycle electrical problems. My job at Honda was to determine which electrical parts were failing and why, then design in more reliable replacements. I also helped Honda dealers sort out electrical problems.

After leaving Honda for Silicon Valley, I worked for DEC, Control Data and Seagate, but continued to repair and restore motorcycles as a hobby. However, once I got a bike running and looking good, I quickly lost interest in it, sold it, and found another one, repeating the process by fixing it up, losing interest and selling it. On average, I restored one cycle a month, for 30 years, fixing about 300 motorcycles, before I lost my “amateur status” and opened a shop in 2010. I have designed electric motorcycles and scooters too; not the slow ones, but ones that go 50+ and have a range of 50 miles. So if it is electrical, I can usually fix it better and faster than any dealer.
